Thanks, Ben! I think it's important to allow the women to speak for themselves -- to allow their voices be central to our reporting on them, rather than peripheral. It's also important not to fetishize or romanticize their struggle -- to avoid that, historical and political context is important. If Marie Claire thinks that kind of context is too heavy for their pages, they shouldn't report on it.
Yours is a tough question! It's something I'm still grappling with myself, because my first impulse is to celebrate the fighters as well. But it's all about recognizing my role as a spectator, and recognizing that the consequences of our celebration of them might mean a perpetuation of war.
