Obviously, many graphic designers are SO not connected with their audience. And neither is the marketing department or the corporate heads. If every time I see a logo recreated horribly, I immediately wonder how the hell it got past the board meetings. How could anyone look at some of these logos and think, "yes our customers will love it and it will grow on them"? Assuming that a logo will grow on a customer is so wrong. If the immediate reaction is so strong, then you obviously missed the point entirely. Asking people to let a logo grow on them is insulting. And you should have known and not approve crappy looking designs.
It's not about values at all - or theories, it's about the people's intelligence, and living in the present, listening to them and talking about all this simply. It's not that they want to blend in and not stand out, they want to be part of society but be a little more exceptional. You can still be original and be part of the group. That's what good artists are good at. It's NOT complicated!
