I am 66. In the fifth grade my dad got us into the Stony Ridge Observatory. This observatory was finished by Lockheed to be used to search for where to land on the moon. Until that point all was a private club. The mirror was so finely ground is the reason they needed it. This is before digital equipment. There were only two youth involved in this club.
To grow up with people like this is a life changer. George Carroll, president and designer of the Stony Ridge group at the time later became the founder and head of the beginning of Lockheed in solar astronomy. He was one of the nicest and most brilliant people I have ever met. Every person in Stony Ridge I owe my knowledge and drive to along with the great teachers I had in high school. If only more people were like them we would have a beautiful world.
