"It’s easy to chalk these numbers up to the myth that immigrants work harder than native blacks, but studies say that’s wrong. According to the aforementioned sociological research from 2009, immigrant students don’t value education more than native blacks or perform significantly better academically. Rather, they have the financial resources required to get a leg-up into the highest echelons of academia"
This is changing the topic. The set of 'immigrant students' on a whole includes both students from Nigeria/Ghana, AND also non-African students such as those from Mexico, Cuba, Dominican Republic, etc. When you talk about the entire category of 'immigrant' students, for all the pluses that one group contributes (better performance) another group negates this performance (lesser performance). The premise of the entire conversation is about the difference between African-Americans vs Nigerians/Ghanaians, and why the Africans tend to be admitted in higher numbers on ivy campuses. So any quote of statistics should also follow this premise. The author should look at statistics that directly compare the two primary categories of comparison in the article, namely Nigerian/Ghanaian vs African-American. And see what the numbers say in terms of the performance of those two groups.
But in my view, the premise of this whole article, pitting African-Americans vs Africans I think stems from envy. Envy is defined as "a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else's possessions, qualities, or luck." The author makes the following point: "But the large numbers of African immigrants on American college campuses, coupled with the remarkably small numbers of native blacks on those same campuses, calls into question the effectiveness of America’s affirmative action programs. While affirmative action started as a system to right the wrongs of slavery and institutional anti-black racism, helping wealthy immigrants who weren’t here for those struggles doesn’t serve any of the program's original intentions."
It's clear from this last point that certain people who covet what the Africans have are squealing bloody murder. If more African-Americans than Africans were admitted to the coveted Ivy League positions, this conversation would not even be taking place. But because Africans are excelling at the perceived expense of African Americans then there is discontent which leads to bs articles like these. There has always been an argument here in America as to whether or not White Americans have a higher cognitive ability than blacks and if this is the reason for the differences in performance between black and white. Now Africans are coming to this country and dominating the boards as it pertains to admission into ivy schools, and now African-Americans are squealing: "While affirmative action started as a system to right the wrongs of slavery and institutional anti-black racism, helping wealthy immigrants who weren’t here for those struggles doesn’t serve any of the program's original intentions." Wtf? Black kids who grow up in America today weren't around for those struggles (1800 to 1960) either, so should affirmative action not apply to them either? And are people really saying that a black person should only be helped by affirmative action if and only if his/her parents and grandparents were born in America? Like bigots only discriminate against people who have parents/grandparents from America, but not against against Africans? Like bigots care about the difference in origin. Come on! Bigots and discriminators don't care about origin. All they see is black. Look at Amadou Diallo. Those bigot NYC cops didn't care about where he was from, they saw one thing, and that was BLACK! And when he dug his hands in his pockets to look for his wallets those cops unloaded on him like he was black. Had he been a white, blond-haired blue-eyed female, I think the outcome would have been very different. But that's a different conversation.
But this whole article ignores the fundamental reason for the difference in admission rates for African vs African-American students. Africans (and to an extent Caribbean kids too)on ivy campuses tend to come to America with a LASER end-focus in mind. A focus to excel. They tend to have learned certain personality traits from a young age such as vision, discipline, grit, assertiveness, confidence, end-focus and so on. They have them clearly in mind. People with these traits tend to achieve more than people without them. Period.
Stop blaming African/Caribbean people for having the personality traits to come to America and compete at the top against wealthy white kids, and at excelling at ivy schools. Stop playing the victim card. That's weak. Instead, look inside yourselves and change your habits so that you can be more effective and more of a scholastic competitor. Then go instill these values into your black American kids. I am a black and I live in arguably the most affluent part of the nation, and I can tell you, too many of the young blacks that I encounter on the train/subway are the antithesis of hard-working, disciplined, law-abiding citizens. They make me ashamed they break my heart. I wouldn't be surprised if white people lump me into the same unruly, ghetto category (not that I care). But when I see how loud and unruly these kids act, I think about their values, their mental models. And they're flawed. With flawed mental models, and inferior performance you're not likely to be admitted into an ivy school. So stop whining and start changing for the better.
