Does it sting to hear people express their own, diverging opinions about shiny downtown Vancouver? Was it GOOD or Mr. Toderian who couldn't take the critical comments?
The terms 'density' and 'community', in the hands of business interests and those that profit off of unchecked development, are nothing more than empty marketing terms. To sum up what I wrote in my now deleted comment, this piece ignores social and economic realities in order to tout values and champion 'amenities' for a particular class of wealthy, mobile denizens.
It's all to serve a narrative of economic growth that ignores the displacement and trauma acted upon long-term communities primarily made up of the working-class, the poor, and people of color. It's happening across North America because consultants like Mr. Toderian and governments can't face the realities that get in the way of their rosy development forecasts.
All that said, I anticipate the censorship of my comment. I realize that to preserve GOOD's values of 'dialogue' and 'community', you can't write anything but self-serving optimism.
