Good model for learning and utilization of public spaces. Greetings from Kenya, Africa

We celebrated our "Good Neighbor Day".... a couple of weekends ago. There are 14 houses on our block.... and everyone was invited to celebrate "Spring".... outside, together. in my yard. I have collected a lot of "outside furniture"... from freecycle and garage sales. A couple of neighbors brought over extra tables and chairs.

My house is at the end of the block... on a sort-of dead-end...... and there is lots of open, public space..... clearly visible from my yard. The children ran and played in this public area.... returning to the yard, frequently.... for more food and drink.

Two of the neighbors have lived in their houses.... for all of the 60 years..... since the houses were built. Their children went to the local elementary school together. By a nice twist of fate... several of the children (in their 50's)... were visiting the parent... each of whom still lives alone!!!!! The "children" caught up... and the parents (in their 80's) loved the time! In fact.... the two 88-year-old parents... were the last ones to leave the party. Their children had to drag them to their homes!

One couple has moved to the block... in the last few months. They sat, with their one-year-old daughter... casually meeting everyone.... and figuring out "who lived in which house".

All in all... about 60 children and 40 adults... attended the afternoon-into-evening party. Some neighbors had other obligations that day.... but we all "filled them in"... later... on the news and the fun we had together.

If the weather had been bad... I would have had to postpone the party.... my small house couldn't hold so many people. But.... it was wonderful to be outside... on a nice, warm spring day.

We all really like.... living on our block!
