Why Our Stories of Social Change Need to Become 'Love' Stories

These days, storytelling is all the rage, but how do we use it to bring people together? Simon Hodges says "for those who work for social justice, the problem has not been making up good stories, but getting people to listen to the ones they have already." He says we our social change stories must become "love" stories since "undermining belief systems – a necessary step in social change – requires an emphasis on shared values and commonality." Stressing those shared values is what builds unity.

    I enjoy this author's take. The positivity in the article that focuses on "love" is excellent. Lasting valuable change comes from affecting the deep-seated emotional core of a person, not buzzwords or destructive belittling.
