I know that the stated mission does not align with my views on the purpose of education.

Nor with mine, Kris. I would love to help effective some positive change in terms of getting the national goals in line with more broad based goals that so many of us seem to share

I would love to help make that change as well. Currently, I try to do that in my classroom by showing my students what it's like to learn, not just memorize. But outside of that, I am still trying to find out how to help facilitate some national reformation.

I am hoping that by using social media sites like GOOD, we can contribute to the national dialogue. There's much more to do than that, but this is a start, right?

In the meantime, keep up the good work in your classroom! I am heartened to know that you are working hard to instill meaningful habits of learning with your students. I do the same with mine, and for some, college is the first time they've been asked to learn in an environment that isn't wholly dictated by tests. At first, many find it absolutely alarming that we don't tell them exactly what will be on our exams. it's a hard habit to break, but such an important trend to buck! Our country's longevity depends on it.
