what a terrific piece - this dovetailed so nicely with my book project that I wrote my own piece on it. here's the link: Kristin, your story below is phenomenal. I made a switch in 2006 to accept only story assignments that move me in some way, or that have a compelling story. it's been awesome ever since!

Who knows where Your volunteering may lead you and what you may learn along the way. So many wonderful opportunities to share our skill sets and to learn from others. I resonate with this 100%. I sold my home & most of my possessions to create/facilitate volunteer literacy project in Belize in 2005, I agree 100%. Since then, donated programs for 33,000 students in Belize and trained 800 teachers how to use their own stories in their schools. My life has expanded in ways never imagined; I've received 1000 times more than I've given and have learned so much on the journey. Last year I volunteered in Kenya, Ghana and Haiti interviewing every day people and collecting their stories of resilience, innovation and entrepreneurship to break the Pity/Poverty Model and change it to Potential and Possibility Model.

I am a believer. Volunteering at my most recent opportunity was so joyous, I left wondering who had really benefitted whom the most. My hope was that I might brighten someone's day, helping at a dance for children and adults with developmental disabilities. Everyone was just so happy to be there. It was really a pleasure and I got a great feeling of appreciation. I am going back this month, so many good opportunities are out there!
