Victorian Photography of Babies and their Hidden Mothers

Long before iPhones, snapping a picture of a child was no simple task. Due to the long exposure times that photographs required in the 19th century, the subjects had to stay perfectly still, which is quite difficult for small children. The solution for many mothers was to attempt to blend into the background, often unsuccessfully.
