    I am listening to the $100 startup audio book by Chris Guillebeau which is the reason I clicked on this article. The article echoes the same message that the $100 startup discusses. There are several more steps then this but it's clear that in researching more about business and marketing that these are very important steps. I'll be saving these notes to relay the message to the creative community I'm a part of. Thank you.

      Hi Alessandra, Great question. Many of our Madesmith designers are great at these three steps and that's what keeps them ahead of the competition. Successful examples include Stephane Hubert (, Gamma Folk (, and Shelter (, and Helen Levi ( among others. Before Madesmith, I worked with brands such as Apple, Google and HBO GO... where I found all of these steps to be a part of the brand's secret sauce. In all of these examples, design plays a major role, but the design is used to create a product fills a gap and a want/need in the market. As an example, Stephan Hubert, who is an architect by training and a furniture designer, is always testing new materials and forms. His work stands out as original and doesn't get stale as a result. Another great example is Lily Piyathaisere who's always playing with new techniques and materials to enhance her collection of accessories. One of her item that we worked with her on is a necklace... but a very unique one made with naturally dyed fibers ( Most of our designers are looking at new and unique ways to solve either new or existing challenges... however, big or small they might be.

        Love those examples. I think creative reuse of materials is something that businesses should focus on. Do you ever do workshops with businesses, focusing on themes like reuse?
