By attaching fluorescent markers to synaptic proteins in the brains of mice, scientists at USC have found a way to see memories form and change in real time. Structural relationships between neurons change as memories are formed—scientists can track these changes by seeing how the markers morph in luminosity and shape.

"The fluorescent markers allow scientists to see live excitatory and inhibitory synapses for the first time and, importantly, how they change as new memories are formed."
