My city in California has some bike lanes, which is certainly helpful when biking. However, I still do not feel very safe when riding in the bike lane. The lane itself is about five feet wide and on one side there are parked cars so there is always the fear of a car door opening at anytime. And, bikers are few so motorists aren't that alert to sharing the road. There is room for lots of improvement for biking in this country.
