The Real Truth About Fake Grass

True or false? Artificial turf or “fake grass” is a great alternative to traditional lawns for water-scarce Los Angeles.

It needs no water, requires basically no maintenance, and is often billed as an eco-friendly choice because it is made from things like recycled tires. Seems like a no-brainer, but fake grass is not a good choice if your goal is a sustainable landscape. Here’s why...

Thanks for posting. I never thought about fake grass from this angle. I have seen lovely landscaping without grass, using native dessert plants.

On another note, I have been thinking of using fake grass, but because I have a 2nd story patio, not a yard.

For a second floor patio it might be a nice choice. In that particular instance, it is doing what it's best at...being a lush-looking green carpet. Just keep in mind, artificial turf gets HOT! Another nice idea, or maybe in addition to, would be native in pots. Here' you'd get the benefit of the smells of sage, and perhaps a butterfly to brighten your day. Here's a great link on keeping natives in containers If you're outside of LA, check with a local native nursery, they have tons of resources. Best of luck!

Thanks Lisa. I do have a few potted plants that I'm working on keeping alive. I'll admit I've never been good with plant, but doing my darndest! I have some herbs, lavendar and some local wildflowers. Eventually, I wanted to get some turf or something for the dog to have a place to do her business, as my aunt has artificial turf and it works well for her dog. Now that I think about it, her place does have a lot of shade though. Thanks for the food for thought.
