Excellent piece. I played high school football and my experience was wholly positive. It provided me it provided me many of the lessons you cite -- such as structure and discipline -- as well as kept me from wasteful, harmful distractions. (It also gave me a few concussions, but everything has its costs). Despite my positive experience, I understand all that you're saying and agree that the culture of the NFL is having an extremely deleterious effect boys and men alike, which is a terrible shame (and so sad) given the exceptional opportunity the NFL has to so significantly shape the character of American men.
