The Neurological Benefits Of Practice

“Why do I have to keep practicing? I know it already!”

Science has a persuasive retort: We don’t just need to learn a task in order to perform it well; we need to overlearn it.

Whenever we learn to make a new movement, we form and then update an internal model which our nervous system uses to predict our muscles’ motions. As that internal model is refined over time, we’re able to cut down on unnecessary movements and eliminate wasted energy.

In other words: You’re getting better and better, even when you can’t tell you’re improving." Absolutely fascinating. I've noticed that when I practice something I always feel better afterwards, even if I dragged my feet a bit beforehand or felt tired, so this explains it!

    LOVE this. Thanks for sharing. The motor skills only develop when you repeat movement and let the neural signals do the work! Reminds me of why I shouldn't have stopped singing! The muscles forget!
