Striking Photographs Reveal the World of Mental Illness Behind Bars

Photographer Jenn Ackerman delicately treads the line between art & ethnography, offering glimpses into worlds that both trouble and intrigue viewers. Her photo series "Trapped," inspired by a NY Times article on the growing population of inmates with mental illness (an estimated 56%), brings viewers into the stark world of someone trapped both physically and psychologically. The photographs are raw, intimate and emotional, shedding light on a community whose stories might otherwise go untold.
