Solar Suitcase Improves Maternal Health in Nigeria

On a research trip in Nigeria, Dr. Laura Satchel watched as physicians performed an emergency cesarean section using the light of a flashlight. She was surprised to learn that lack of electricity led midwives to use makeshift lighting such as candles and cell phones to deliver babies. With the help of her husband, she produced the solar suitcase to provide light and improve communication. Over the next year, the hospital reported that the death rate for women decreased 70 percent.
