Should Schools Have Students Do Slavery Reenactments?

A 12-year-old girl on a four-day field trip was forced to pretend to be a slave. The real-life threats that were actually made to slaves were made to her. "The instructors called them animals who had no rights. The instructors also threatened to whip her, cut her Achilles tendon or hang her if she tried to run away." What steps should be taken to help kids learn about slavery without having to go this far?
