Some say the "Bystander Effect" - the idea that a bunch of bystanders will do nothing because each is thinking the other will take care of it - is hard wired, but some researchers are finding that that's not the case. We can learn to take the initiative, to be "that guy" - the one who takes necessary action.

What's your experience? What do you do when you are a candidate to be "that guy" - to be the one to help someone, to give up their seat on the bus, to offer an encouraging word?
