So many of these states do not understand that the govt highways funding from the government is for Not just road building and repair but for Rest area and maintaining of the rest areas. So by closing them they are actually stealing yours and my tax money that each driver that buys gasoline and diesel fuel. Trucks pay taxes that automobile owners do not. highway use tax, road use tax. there are probably 4 other taxes we pay and most are to keep funding the roads and bridges budget. We also pay state taxes and some county taxes at the pump. .Our taxes pay for a lot of things. So if you do not want your tax dollars to be stolen by these criminal leaning states voice your disappointment with them and demand that they keep rest areas open since YOU the TAX payer is supporting the building and maintenance of them. Tell your representative to either force the issue or reduce the taxes proportionally as they close them . . Since nearly all states misappropriate the funds that the government gives to them for services they expect you to suffer with it with you mouth shut.. Rest area's are keeping our highways safer. You can stretch your legs. Get out of the car and get fresh air. You can walk around and that gets the circulation going in the lower body. It is for safe motoring and now, that means nothing to the elected officials you depend on to give you what your taxes are paying for.
An alternative to this. If there is no safe place like a rest area when you need one you are put at risk. Not just from driving tired, bathroom amenities were not available to you and many have security that will not be there for you. , You are now at risk.
So I say this. Tell your governor that if you are involved in a accident or have health issue that could have been prevented if the rest area was open you will sue them for millions of dollars for promoting an unsafe situation that could have been prevented when money was available to keep them open .The government did NOT cut the funding for rest areas and maintaining them. the states misspent the money for other things unrelated.
Insurance companies that cover the states will also be interested in the Millions they will have to pay out. Virginia was going to close 20 rest areas. Threats of this action and the realization of not using the government money that was targeted for rest area would not be available . They did not close them as they planned. All it takes is contact them and tell them how you feel.
