Real Faces, Real People, Real Love in Vietnam

Shannon Yarbrough

Vietnamese photographer Maika Elan takes intimate portraits of gay couples in Vietnam. From the artist: "The 'acceptance' of the nature of homosexuality is mostly based on sympathy, ignorance or even contempt. There has not been any recognition and/or encouragement of homosexuality as human right to love and to be loved... I want to show that their loving and caring for each other is nothing deviant." These photos are beautiful. Do you know of any reaction to them from Vietnamese people?

It's so interesting that they are considering legalizing gay marriage but gay people can't even hold hands without being pointed at. Although it sounds like it wont pass, if it did, I wonder if that would make the public more accepting.

I would hope so! I see perspectives changing here in Atlanta as pro-equal rights legislation and activism get more attention. It's encouraging. :)
