    This is a strong example of engaged academics drawing face-to-face with those directly in need. The positive results of this work for the immigrant worker projects is evident. But the knowledge/perceptions that the academicians gained may also shift their future dimensions of engagement and ethical assessment. Congratulations to faculty and students for this very valuable collaboration

    I agree Priscilla. It does benefit everyone. Until this project, many of my students never worked with clients, let alone clients who are trying to advance important social issues. During our project with El Centro, it was great to see the occasional "ah ha" moments during class when we figured out how to navigate a particular aspect of a project and when the students realized the potential social impact of their work. From my experience, there are a couple of hurdles to overcome during these collaborations. Some of the big ones have to do with the limited time frame of the semester, and managing the expectations of the client (and students) in terms of what can be achieved. And this collaboration with Milano was especially rewarding because of the expertise they brought to the process. There's a lot to be learned throughout the process and I'm always happy to work on community-based projects in class.

    I think the idea of having schools partner with local non-profit organizations is pure genius! It allows students to not only learn about public policies and community organization such as "El Centro", but to apply the skills they have been taught. It tackles two problems. 1. Lack of funding to community organizations for advertising and development, and 2. Gives students some hands-on experience while in school. I definitely think Universities should partner with community-run organizations to both benefit the school and the local issues. They could allocate different projects to different degree colleges like marketing, business, political science, and sociology.
