PHOTOS: What the Wild, Wild West Really Looked Like (Hint: Stunning)

In the late 1800s photographer Timothy O'Sullivan captured, in gorgeous sepia-tone, the first ever images of the American West's rocky and barren landscape. O'Sullivan, who used a box camera, worked with the government as they explored Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and the rest of the west to uncover the land's untapped natural resources. He also took pictures of the Native American population for the first time and the images he brought back were stunning.
