BEHAVIORAL SCIENCE + TECHNOLOGY = LESS WASTE: Opower, founded by TED talker Alex Laskey, helps utility companies show customers, right on their utility bills, where their own house sits on the spectrum of neighborhood energy wasters — and how to beat the game. A 2003 study found that money saving, environmental, and citizenship messaging had no effect on energy consumption, but when pitted against their neighbors, people took notice and started to conserve.

      Humans. Never a dull moment! Ok but seriously I looked into it and geeked out a little bit, and it totally makes sense based on the tragedy of the commons theory... experimental data shows that cooperative behavior is more common in smaller groups when faced with the dilemma of how to share a public resource. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons
