NASA Spacecraft Sends Data Amazingly Fast via Laser

Rodrigo Mejia

Over the weekend, while the rest of us on Earth dealt with our slow internet speeds, NASA and MIT were busy receiving data at 622 megabits per second by laser, from space. Beaming the data was their moon-orbiting Lunar Laser Communications Demonstrator (LLCD), a spacecraft tasked with checking the transmission benefits laser has over radio (used in all other spacecraft currently). Because of the short wavelength of laser, "10,000 times shorter than radio," much more data can be delivered.
