NASA Enrolls Decommissioned Military Drones To Study Tropical Storms

A pair of ex-Air force drones are being used to research tropical storms over the Atlantic Ocean. This 2013 hurricane season, the research will be focused on the inner working of storms; measuring different types of winds and precipitation during hurricanes so NASA can improve storm prediction and forecast models. These drones, which were initially used for surveillance missions in the Middle East, are well-suited for atmospheric studies because they can reach very high elevations.
