Kurdish Artists Bring Violence Against Women Into the Open

In northern Iraq, reports of rape, domestic violence, honor killings and female genital mutilation are widespread among Kurdish women. In an effort to raise awareness of these issues, the Campaign to Combat Violence Against Women displayed 29 paintings by local artists into the Duhuk city bazaar. The paintings depict images of violence, as well as images of women as caregivers and nurturers. Organizers say the program, part of an annual anti-violence campaign, has been successful.
