Indian Teenager Overcomes Childhood Torment to Win Scholarship to Bard College

Eighteen-year-old Shweta Katti grew up above a brothel in Mumbai's largest red-light district and faced many difficulties, such as being abused at age 12. Despite the challenges, with support from her mother and help from a local charity, Katti won a scholarship to Bard College in New York. She plans to study psychology to help other women back home, and hopes her story will inspire others to dream big. "Every girl has it in herself... If given a chance, everybody can do this," Katti said.
