Sushma Verma, a 13-year-old girl from a poor family in India, has enrolled in a master's degree in microbiology at Lucknow's B.R Ambedkar Central University. Her father, who earns less than $3.50 per day working in construction, sold his land to pay for some of her tuition. She says her accomplishments were only possible with the support of her parents. "They allowed me to do what I wanted to do," Verma said. "I hope that other parents don't impose their choices on their children."
