In a Smog-Covered City, a Small Bicycle Shop Matters Most

Bakersfield, California holds the dubious honor of being the most air-polluted place in the nation, making the need for healthy outlets all the more important. Paid for by a two-year grant from the California Endowment's Building Healthy Communities Initiative, the nearby city of Arvin opened up Bike Kitchen, the community's sole cycling hub that will be a one-stop destination for bike tours, safety classes, and basic repair jobs in a city with an average of 73 "bad air days" a year.
