Illuminating Rural Guatemala with Solar Energy and Cell Phones

While NGOs have donated solar power systems to rural communities, they leave, the batteries eventually die, and families revert to using candles for light. Coming from the corporate world, Juan Rodriguez and Manuel Aguilar try a different approach. Their social enterprise, Quetsol, uses a pay-as-you-go model that gives financial flexibility; when consumers want electricity, they enter a code onto their cell phones. This is an exciting (and expanding) project that I'm keeping on my radar!
