How An Engineering Professor Might Help Protect Football Players from Life-Threatening Brain Damage

Just as the NFL has settled a lawsuit with football players who have suffered brain damage from concussions sustained on the field comes a hopeful report about a UCLA professor who has developed a polymer that can go inside a football player's helmet to reduce the impact of a blow to the head—by as much as 25 percent. Interestingly, he wasn't thinking of football players when he began work on this; he started by working with the Navy on ways to protect soldiers from the impact of explosions.
