a problem shared...from basement solitude to co-working milieu, is not necessarily a problem halved. The trend for co-working in open collaborative spaces, is in many experts opinion, a recipe for more social engagement (which is great), and infinite levels of noise, distractions and interruptions (which is definitely not).

Cannuck company CanFocus (nice alliteration!) is developing a physical and digital devices distraction management system, simultaneously putting on hold for a limited period of time all emails, texts, IM's and calls when you absolutely need to focus on work.

Its kinda neat, take a look. I have a mate who works there, and rumor has it they are going kickstarter in Sept for a Christmas product roll-out.

Hey! The building is located at 1275 E. 6th Street, in between Alameda and Mateo, near the 6th Street Bridge. We will be ready to open October. Thanks for your interest!

      • Jasmine Youssefzadeh

Hey Sonja! Have you opened? I would love to come check it out.

      • Jawaid Ismail

Cool! I'm next door at Factory Place. Glad to see someone from Canada is making waves in LA:) I moved from Ottawa to LA two years ago.

  • Kristin Pedemonti

Thank you for supporting independent Creatives. Best wishes to you on your campaign to provide a co-working space. So many of us can benefit when we're In this Together! Hoping for more co-working spaces on the East Coast, expand please. :)

First of all, LA is CHOCK FULL of co-working spaces. Sooooo how in the world is this relevant to "Good"? This is a business like any other that is trying to fulfill a need that small businesses (aka freelancers) might find useful or even necessary.

With this update, its so nice to see that Good is interested in doing more than promoting *actual* positive change for the world, its also interested in Press Releases for a regular old carbon-emitting business (what, you didn't know that even your iPhone uses more electricity per year that you refrigerator?)

    How refreshing.

You should definitely check out Hub LA (, also in the Arts District at 830 Traction Ave. I'm sure Elizabeth Stewart would enjoy sharing her story with you.

    • sonja rasula

:) Hey Erik! I love the HUB network... I actually know Elizabeth, and I've partnered with the HUB LA on a few occasions. :) We've held workshops there and they helped us spread the word about CAMP (, a creative conference I started this year. We love them and can't wait to work with them further...

      • Erik Tilkemeier

Love your endeavors, Sonja! CAMP is a great concept, as is your co-working space, and UNIQUE. Glad to hear you know Elizabeth, I was impressed when I spoke with her about the Hub project. Would enjoy learning more about your plans.

  • Scott Taylor

You should check out the HUB network. They have affiliated coworking spaces all over the world. I'm a member of the Hub Seattle and they really work hard to encourage collaborations between members and are a cornerstone of the Seattle social entreprenurial community.

    • sonja rasula

Hey Scott! See my response to Erik above... :) I really LOVE the HUB network and am excited to see them grow more and more every year. Cool to know that you're a co-work member there. I've never actually been to Seattle but one day... I hear so many great things about it! Thanks for the support!

Sounds good & wish you luck in your endeavor, Sonja! I'm a Board Member at Droplabs, a co-working, hackerspace & classroom/meetup place here in Downtown LA. Matter of fact, we were the first ones in Downtown LA. Now there's about 4-5 co-working spaces in the Downtown area. Not sure if you've come out to visit but you're more than welcome to do so cuz if you're talking about being surrounded by creative types it really doesn't get better than our space which is located in Big Art Labs & right next to the Brewery (the world's largest live-in artist colony).

We're pretty proud of all the entrepreneurs, techies, makers & engineers who've used our space to build & launch their products, but we're also very happy to have hosted so many awesome meetups & supported several communities along the way. Again, best of luck to you & your project!

    • sonja rasula

Hey Miguel! I didn't know about Droplabs, thanks for sharing! Hopefully once we are up and running, and things settle down, we'd love to have a co-mixing happy hour or something with y'all... :)

    • sonja rasula

      Cool, thanks for sharing Jin!

  • Briana Myricks

Looks awesome! I've visited BlankSpaces in Miracle Mile and fell in love with the thought of coworking spaces. I hope they spread to Long Beach and the OC.

    • sonja rasula

As Craig mentioned, We Labs is out where you are Briana... :) And there are loads of co-work spaces in Santa Monica...

    • Craig Ogg

There is a co-working space in Long Beach, CA: I have walked past it but haven't visited it yet.

      • Briana Myricks

Cool, and it's not far from my place. Thanks Craig!

  • Haroon Dean

This is so awesome! Hope to see these spread into the OC!

    • sonja rasula

Thanks Haroon! Come up to LA sometime and try out our building when it's finished. We'd love to see what you think about our co-working experience!

      • Haroon Dean

That would be awesome! :) I recently saw your kickstarter page for Unique, and I was kinda bummed because I couldn't really pledge at the moment. But I was wondering if I could come through to LA sometime and help out with some renovations/ or whatever else you guys need to make that workplace "unique?" I saw that you were good at "organizing and leading community" and that's what I'm trying to get into soon!

While living in Chicago, I was always amazed by the tech hubs and workspaces available to startups (ex. 1871). As a native of SoCal and LA, I truly hope we can transform our city for the better as well!

    • a.furumoto

Only if you lived, worked and voted north of 24th St. or in the golden, U of Chicago-dominated Hyde Park/Kenwood enclave - hopefully we can transform & make whole the whole city.

    • sonja rasula

Thanks Christine! I agree - we've seen co-working examples in a lot of other major cities like SF, NYC etc. It's time for LA to have a place that cultivates creativity as well as tech startups.

    • Alessandra Rizzotti

I hope this inspires more co-working spaces in LA. Do you know of any more in the city?

      • Christine Kim

In Chicago, I've heard great things about The Coop, too. As for Los Angeles, I know of HUB LA and Flip-Work.

  • Erna

I think that co-working spaces are going to be very important to the future of the way we work, and this one sounds like a great resource. I came across this call for essays on the future of work - you should check it out.

    • sonja rasula

Great article. Thanks for sharing! I'm encouraged by the fact that a lot of people are willing and actively looking for a way to reform "work" and workplaces. We can do better - and we're doing something to change it. Thanks for your support!!

    • Alessandra Rizzotti

Awesome! Thanks for sharing! I'm interested to see how many collaborations happen as a result of this space!
