Getting Outside the City Affects How We Value the Future, Fosters Sustainable Attitudes

Going for the immediate gain is commonly thought as the result of laziness, but it may be caused by your surroundings. New research, published in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, links valuing long-term, sustainable lifestyles with the amount of exposure to natural environments. Those living outside the city, or who frequent the outdoors, are less likely to discount the value of future gains, fostering sustainable resource use. Conversely, city folk have a harder time valuing the future.
