Teaching Tolerance's latest report, Teaching the Movement 2014, details "the state of civil rights education in each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia." As Henry Louis Gates notes, "Fewer than half of U.S. states today include in their major curriculum documents any information on Jim Crow laws, which, for a century, divided citizens by color according to the paradoxical formula, 'separate but equal.'"
