Do We Need a Return to 'Old-School' Strict Teachers?

In fourth grade I had a teacher named Sister Paula who'd throw our sub-par assignments in the trash and would yell "stop crying those baby alligator tears" when we whined about having to do assignments over. In the Wall Street Journal, Joanne Lipman says we need a return to these kind of old-school methods because research shows that they help kids develop grit and perseverance, and students do better academically in the long run (even if they cry while they're learning.)
