DIY Flying: Team Developing Open Source, Low-Cost Airplane

Homemade airplanes are nothing new (an 84-year-old grandfather built one out of a bathtub), but a group of pilots and engineers are developing something that hasn't been done before: an open source airplane. Called the "Maker Plane," the intention is to have a flexible, low-cost design that can be built using common DIY tools, methods, and composite material (such as 3-D printed instruments and navigation systems from other open source plans). Estimated build cost is just under $15,000.
