China Acts to Desmog the Air


The Chinese government has made its boldest promise in many years since winning the bid to the 2008 Summer Olympics games to cure its air pollution problem. Or more precisely to alleviate its severity. The latest measures include banning new coal-fired power plants from being built in three metropolitan clusters around Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. By 2017, according to this ambitious plan, it aims to cut back air pollution by at least 25% in Beijing compared with its 2012 levels.
