My father made it very clear to me they would not be able to pay for my college education, but they would pay for my room/board and food. I started working as a freshman and once my parents no longer claimed me on their taxes, I was able to get work grants so I could stay on campus. I never thought I was being cheated or thought this was a burden, I just assumed that's the way things were done. And yes I was a very good student.
