Bitcoin Experiment at MIT

Donors have committed to giving $100 in bitcoins to each of MIT’s about 4,500 undergraduates this fall.

The original suggestion was just to give bitcoin to a select group of students. Instead they've chosen to include all undergrads -- in an effort to get enough people involved for there to be “network effects.”

    Love how they're changing the game for app developers, especially within their existing community: “Everybody has access to the Internet, right — so you want to launch a webapp? Everybody can do that. You want to launch a bitcoin or cryptocurrency app? That’s a little bit harder … you can’t test it in your immediate friend group. But hopefully [that’s] what we’ll enable.”

    Makes me wonder about the possibility of using bitcoin within our immediate neighborhoods/small businesses.
