'Biomarker' in Women's Blood May Prove an Early Sign of Ovarian Cancer

By looking at a 'biomarker' in women's blood, researchers are hoping to develop effective early detection screening for ovarian cancer, something that is often caught in advanced stages. The biomarker--carbohydrate antigen 125--was measured for fluctuations in blood samples from over 4,000 post-menopausal women over a 10-year period. Equating high levels of the antigen with increased risk, researchers were able to recommend transvaginal ultrasounds for 117 women, leading to 10 surgeries.
