I LOVE this! We don't have kids yet but my husband and I plan to fit a lot of travelling into our future families lifestyle and when we tell people this it seems to garner responses like, "ha, good luck, you don't know how difficult it is to travel with kids" or "get it out of your system now cause once you have kids, its all over". Anyway, i love your adventurous spirit! Thanks for the article, super encouraging!

Thank you for the tip. Cambodia, get ready for Sovanna and Bryanna (soon when I have enough funds for both of us).

    • Alisha Gaddis

Can't wait to hear all about it when it happens! Safe travels always!

Thank you very much Alisha :-)

I love these tips. They're fun but also practical. Makes me want to whisk my niece away!

Thanks Alessandra! Me too! We just got back from Italy and it makes me want to leave again NOW! Yay to the world!

There are few more important lessons you can teach than that the world is a strange and wonderful place of almost infinite diversity and, most important, that you and the ways you are accustomed to are just another diverse gem on this kaleidoscopic spaceship. Oh, and Alisha, congratulations to Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band on their Latin Grammy Nomination and their new CD Lishy Lou and Lucky Too. I've never seen a child so insistent about sleeping, literally, with a CD before. Lou! You are the kindest! Thank you for your words and continual generosity! I love that you said this "another diverse gem on this kaleidoscopic spaceship" YES!!! And thank you for the congrats and kindness! xo

Oh ya- Alisha, did you take your kid to see any awesome music adventures? Or did you take any fun classes? I love your music, BTW!

      • Alisha Gaddis

Sorry for the delayed response Alessandra- we were literally out of the country...again! We do take Ella to see live music. A lot. It is part of her DNA I think! She doesn't take fun classes while we are away (although I love that idea!), but she does while we are here- violin, swimming, gymnastics, cooking- anything that is her whim! We do family workshops too! I should write about that! HA! Thanks for listening to the music too! Really, really appreciate that!

        • Alessandra Rizzotti

Would love to know about the family workshops. Didn't realize they had classes like that!

This is fantastic! Makes me want to take my little nephew on a big adventure soon!!

Question for parents who might not have the means to do "big adventures" overseas: how do you still give kids the chance to travel and learn outside your usual comfort zones (and language)?

    • Alisha Gaddis

Hi Carolyn! I would love to address your question. We try to have 'staycations' in our own city of Los Angeles (you give me an idea to write it)! We try to see different part of our own city- Chinatown, Alvarado street, even the Filipino restaurant down the way. Each little spot can be a lesson, an adventure, a dip into the pool of diversity. I am grateful travel is part of what I do for a living, but there were times when I absolutely did not have this luxury- and you are right- we must still venture outside ourselves for the new, the old, the expansion! Thank you SO much for bringing this up! I am going to write more!!...
