Artist Gives Amputees New Lease on Life by Making Art With Prosthetic Limbs

Sophie de Oliveira Barata creates stunning artwork out of a very unlikely medium—prosthetic limbs. Working in collaboration with amputees and other artists, Sophie customizes prosthetics to look beautiful and creative, saying “It’s drawing attention to their disability in a positive way…Rather than people seeing what’s missing, it’s about what they’ve got." Losing a limb can be alienating and disempowering, this is a creative way for amputees to feel powerful again.

    These are so gorgeous that I want one. When I was in a neckbrace for ten months, I bedazzled it so that I could feel better about wearing it. It was fun and let me see the humor in my injury. (On the back of it was "JUICY" in rhinestones-- it was a joke).
