Arming the Schoolhouse: In One Arkansas District, Your Teacher Might Be Carrying a Gun

In the aftermath of the Newtown school shooting, gun advocates called for teachers to be armed. When kids in Clarksville, AR head back to school in a few weeks, they'll be attending schools staffed by educators carrying concealed weapons. The town's school district's "making use of a little-known Arkansas law that allows licensed, armed security guards on campus." After 53 hours of training, 20 teachers and other staff members are also security guards who are equipped to protect kids.

    This seems like the opposite of a good thing to me. First, it's a terrible tragedy that parents and teachers feel so scared they think this is necessary, and second -- well, I don't really want to get into that discussion. I'm Australian. Guns are strictly for farmers, drug dealers and police officers.

      Yeah, I grew up with family members owning guns and there are guns in my home but I'd be very uncomfortable with this.
