Afghanistan's First Female Governor Wins Ramon Magsaysay Award

Habiba Sarabi, Afghanistan’s first and only female governor, is among this year's recipients of the Ramon Magsaysay Award, considered by many to be Asia's version of the Nobel Prize. She was chosen for building a functioning local government and pushing for women’s rights and public education in the Bayman province, despite working in a violent environment in which discrimination is pervasive. Under her leadership, women now take up careers that were forbidden under the Taliban regime.
