For eight years, 24-year-old Laxmi Aggarwal hid her face, which was disfigured by a man who hurled acid at her. But after protests spurred by a New Delhi gang rape, she decided to speak out. Laxmi became the face of a new campaign called Stop Acid Attacks, which educates people about the abuse and pushes government for long-term medical treatment for victims. “I now realize that hiding my face is the same as staying silent, especially when everybody around me is speaking up,” she said.
