    I love this idea. It reminds me of Play Pumps. I wonder if they will have similar difficulties as they get implement them in more communities. Play Pumps found that their pumps were unable to provide water for an entire community and it required the momentum of a group of children to pump enough water to the surface for use. This made it impossible for a single adult woman to use the pump and retrieve water.

    It seems more feasible with power, since it can be stored more easily in battery packs. I'm interested to see where this goes.

      I'm curious to learn more about how it works, too. It's not clear how many lanterns can be charged from a single play session. What ended up happening with Play Pumps- are they still around?

        From Empower Playground's website it seems that the merry-go-round doesn't directly charge the lanterns it charges a battery underground:

        "The electricity generated by the merry-go-round and all other play equipment in the EPI system is carried by underground wires to a power enclosure, created by Goal Zero, where it is converted to direct current and used to charge a large AGM deep cycle battery (much like those found in golf carts). In the enclosre, a state-of-the-art MPPT (maximum power point tracking) power controller effectively manages the charging and discharging of the storage batteries, protecting against drainage and ensuring long battery life."

    What a great idea. I wonder if they're planning to expand into other countries...

      Great idea indeed. This is very clever project, its a Win-Win-Win. The sad thing is that most of these kids would be happy to see just a regular merry-go-round built next to their schools, which probably don't have many of such facilities.
