Did you know?
Many local malls and shopping centers will open at 6 p.m. ON Thanksgiving, taking employees away from their families and the dinner table.
With experience working in retail, I can attest to the type of intimidation used to get employees to show up on Black Friday.
Though the people who work on Thanksgiving shouldn't have to make a choice between spending time with their loved ones and holiday pay, they still deserve a choice.
Though I am no longer employed within the Great Lakes Crossing shopping center, I remember what it was like to have to pull an all-nighter. And when I was put on the schedule there was no opt-out choice.
Either you showed up or you faced the consequences. (You'd be fired)
If you were one of the lucky ones who didn't have to arrive to work at midnight and work the next 8 hours of hell, then you were probably scheduled two separate shifts: one in the middle of the night (3 a.m.- 9 a.m.), and one the next day (1 p.m. - 7 p.m.)
