Did you know that many children are forced to labor on cocoa plantations in countries like the Ivory Coast and Ghana?
While it is difficult to give quantitative data on child trafficking, UNICEF estimates that in Côte d’Ivoire alone approximately 200,000 children work on cocoa farms. By purchasing Fair Trade chocolate for Halloween, you can ensure that no slave or child labor was used in the production of your chocolate!
Next week, I'll be speaking with experts in the Fair Trade movement about how supporting Fair Trade can help empower workers and keep children in school and out of agriculture, among other industries.
